La Masia closes its doors

From June 30th, La Masia has ceased housing the young sportsmen who are being trained to become a part of the Club’s professional teams. In a simple, but emotionally charged ceremony, the doors were today closed on La Masia.
La Masia closes its doors
At twelve noon today, La Masia closed its doors for the last time as a home for up and coming youngsters, after 32 years. Club sporting vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu, football academy director Jordi Mestre, the director of La Masia, Carles Folguera and the professional football director and ex-resident at La Masia Guillermo Amor took charge of the official closing, with the new Centre de Formació Oriol Tort at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper taking over the function of a residential centre for the youngsters from tomorrow. The 16 trophies won this season were displayed at the front door of the building for the ceremony, attended by a large number of reporters.

Emblematic space
“This is a symbolic act as we close the old Masia. We are moving and La Masia has had the success it has had – today we are proud to show the 16 titles we have won this season and the graduates of La Masia have had a lot to do with that success”, explained Sr, Bartomeu.

Sporting success –but educating people too
Jordi Mestre insisted on the importance of the titles which the Club’s youth teams have won this year: “between the various youth and children’s teams, together with the women’s football team, we have won 19 titles. We should also stress the importance of the B team and even though they didn’t win any title, to come third in the Segona A is just as good”.

2011-06-30_ACTO_CLAUSURA_LA_MASIA_021.jpgMestre also stressed that titles weren’t the only way to measure success: “for us, the most important thing is when one of our youngsters gets into the first team. We also place great value on the fact that both the first team and the B team have won the Fair Play award”. There was also thanks and recognition for the work of the various coaches and trainers: “our mission is to educate players and people. We have to be a competitive club, but we don’t want to win at any price”, according to Sr Mestre.

Values remain the same
This was a particularly emotive moment for two of the men at the ceremony - Carles Folguera and Guillermo Amor. The Director of La Masia is convinced that the success of the institution will continue in its new home at the Ciutat Esportiva: “we are very excited about the move. We are moving to a residential home which will be an example to the whole world because of the great possibilities it offers. It’ll mean an improvement in organising things, with the medical services which are in the Ciutat Esportiva and with the increased number of places we will be able to offer”, explained Sr Folguera. There may be a change in location, but Sr Folguera insisted: “we will continue with the same ideas and those of us at La Masia are very committed - we will be a much more important reference point for the professional teams with the bigger residence. We will be very happy if we can match success with helping to form excellent people too”.

Both Folguera and Guillermo Amor, who was one of the first residents at the Masia in 1980, thanked the then board for the decision to set up the residence. Amor also explained: “I’m more nervous now than I was when I first came in 1980. This is not an easy day. This wasn’t just a residential sporting centre for me –it was like a home. We’ll have a great new centre and we have to make sure we take the family atmosphere there with us. Naming it after Oriol Tort is a good start”.

The U.S. president, Barack Obama, compared himself to Lionel Messi

The Colorado Rapids, MLS champions, presented a shirt with the number 10', reserved for the team leader, to the U.S. President, and he compared himself to the FC Barcelona striker.

Barça’s global recognition has even reached the White House. The U.S. President, Barack Obama compared himself to the first team player Lionel Messi. Obama made this comparison during the official reception for the champions of the North American Soccer League (MLS), the Colorado Rapids.

The director of the Rapids, Jeff Plush, presented the President with a shirt from the Denver team, with the number 10 on the back, “reserved for the team leader”. Obama, on receiving the gift, said: "Like me and Messi, at the same level".

Obama, a basketball fan, has emotional ties with football as his daughters, Malia and Sasha, practice the sport known in the United States as soccer. It’s not surprising that the President auto-defined himself as a "football father".

Obama's response occurred exactly one month ahead of the game in Washington where Barça will be playing against Manchester United on the 30th of July (at 19.00 GMT-4). It will be the first game that the team is scheduled to play on their 2011 tour of the United States.

Villa: “I’d love to retire at Barça”

David Villa has categorically denied rumours about a move to England and expressed his desire to play at the Club for the rest of his career. Villa also spoke about possible new signings at the Camp Nou.
Villa: “I’d love to retire at Barça”
Villa doesn’t want to hear anything about any move to the Premier League, nor indeed anywhere else and speaking at a promotional event in Gandia he made it clear: “I’ve not let all that has been said affect me, it’s not even a rumour or speculation –it’s just a lie. I’m still just 29, and I’d love to retire here at Barça, because that would mean everything had gone great – I want to be here for as long as possible”.

Cesc and Alexis
villa_5.JPGAsked about any possible summer signings at the Club, such as Cesc Fàbregas and Alexis Sánchez: “they are two players of a very high quality, both as individuals and as part of a collective. If they come, it will mean a big leap in quality”.

“Mata is like a brother to me

There has also been speculation about Villa’s ex- Valencia teammate Juan Mata possibly making a move and the Barça striker explained: “just imagine how excited I would be about that. Not just because of what he brings as a player, but also because he’s like a brother to me and playing alongside him again would be like a dream”.

Barça players at the Olympics

Five members of the first team squad have played in the Olympic Games – Guardiola in 1992, Xavi and Puyol in Sidney in 2000 and the Argentineans Messi and Mascherano in the 2008 games in Beijing.

Barça players at the Olympics It’s every sportsman’s dream to play in an Olympic Games, where the best of every discipline come together to compete in a fantastic spectacle that is the focus of the whole world’s attention. Only five of Barça’s first team squad – including the boss -have ever had that wonderful experience.

Argentina Gold
messi_i_kun.jpgIt was a difficult summer in 2008, but it ended happily with Leo Messi finally returning from the Beijing Olympics with a gold medal after the Argentinean team, which included Javier Mascherano beat Nigeria in the final thanks to a Di Maria goal set up by Messi himself.

Xavi and Puyol
After missing out at the 2004 and 2008 games, Spain will again be present in at London 2012. The last time the Spanish team made it through to a Games was at Sidney in 2000, when they lost on penalties to Eto’o’s Cameroon. Xavi and Puyol were both in the young Spanish squad and both played in the final.

Guardiola
In the unforgettable summer of 1992, Pep Guardiola, alongside Chapi Ferrer, Luis Enrique, Abelardo, Kiko and Alfonso, helped Spain win their only gold medal in the competition, beating Poland in the final at the Camp Nou. Can the latest crop of Spanish youngsters repeat that feat next year in London?

Happy Birthday Leo!

This Friday, June 24th, is Leo Messi’s birthday and he’s reached 24 years old as the world’s top player after completing a wonderful year for the Club. Below we detail the records the young Argentinean has set this season. Happy Birthday Leo!
Most goals in a season: Messi has produced his best ever scoring stats this year, with 53 goals in 55 games for the team: 31 in the league, 12 in the Champions League, 7 in the Spanish Cup and 3 in the Spanish Super Cup. His previous best was 47 goals scored in the 2009/10 campaign.

Matches the most goals in a Champions League: Messi’s 12 goals matches Ruud Van Nistelroy’s dozen in the 2002/03 edition of the competition.

First time he’s scored in a UCL semi final: Leo Messi had surprisingly never managed a goal in a Champions League semi final. But he put that right with two strikes at the Bernabeu on April 27th –the second being one of the goals of the season.

First goal in England: Messi also broke his scoring duck in the land that invented the game – and what better occasion to do it than in the Champions League Final at Wembley!

Century of league goals: On November 20th 2010, Messi got a hat trick in the 0-8 demolition of Almeria to take his league scoring past the hundred mark.

150 goals for the Club: Four days later, he scored in the 0-3 win against Panathinaikos to pass the 150 goal mark in all competitions for the Club.

More games than ever: So far this season, Messi has played in 62 games for club and country and with the Copa America due to begin on July 1st, he looks set to break his record of 64 appearances in a single season.

Three more titles: With the Spanish Super Cup. League and Champions League titles won this season, Messi has now won a total of 15 trophies with the Club – 5 leagues, 4 Spanish Super Cups, 3 Champions Leagues, a Spanish Cup, a World Club Cup and a European Super Cup.

Juan Carlos Unzué, returns to Club as goalkeeping coach

FC Barcelona wish to communicate that they have reached an agreement with Juan Carlos Unzué to become goalkeeping coach for next season, with an option of a further year.
Juan Carlos Unzué, returns to Club as goalkeeping coach
Carles Busquets, who has filled the post this season, will move to take on the same role with the B team.

Seven years as goalkeeping coach
Unzué, who played at Osasuna, Barça, Tenerife and Oviedo, re-joined the Club at the start of the 2003/04 season as goalkeeping coach with Frank Rijkaard and after five years working with the Dutch manager, he was kept on when Pep Guardiola took over as boss.

One year at Numancia
However, Unzue decided to then move into management himself and took the post at Numancia and in his first season he took them to tenth spot, clear of relegation and nearly making the play off positions. After last year’s single season in Soria, Unzué has now returned to the back room staff at the Club and will begin work when the squad return on July 18th.

Barça will also display UNICEF in the Champions League

UEFA will allow FC Barcelona to display the UNICEF logo on the back of the shirt during Champions League matches in the 2011/12 season.

Barça will also display UNICEF in the Champions League
The Board spokesman, Toni Freixa, announced at a news conference this Wednesday: "As a result of our active action with UEFA, and their willingness, it will be possible that in next season’s Champions League matches we can display the UNICEF logo on the back of our shirt, and we’re just waiting for the final design".

Toni Freixa wanted to thank, on behalf of Barça, "the willingness of UEFA", the result of which will allow the image of FC Barcelona in the Champions League to continue to be associated with UNICEF.

Two sponsors on the shirt
So, Barça will have 2 sponsors names on the shirt in all three competitions: Qatar Foundation on the front of the shirt and UNICEF on the back.

Freixa acknowledges an offer from Roma for Bojan

The secretary and spokesman of the FC Barcelona board, Toni Freixa, said this Wednesday that Barça has received an offer from Roma for Bojan Krkic: "We have an offer but it’s still in the study and evaluation phase".

Freixa acknowledges an offer from Roma for Bojan
FC Barcelona have received a formal offer for Bojan Krkic, but no agreement has been reached. "We understand that the Roma can hardly publish something that is still in the study and evaluation phase", Freixa pointed out at a press conference this Wednesday morning.

Bojan, in the study phase
"Obviously when you receive an offer like this and the club is considering it, it’s because it raises the possibility that it’s feasible," added the secretary and spokesman, who didn’t want to anticipate any event.

Other names
Asked about other names appearing these days in various media, such as Alexis Sanchez and Jeffren Suarez, Freixa was clear about it: "We won’t reveal the content of the possible negotiations, to preserve the interests of Barça".

Maximum competitive level
The FC Barcelona sports management team is working hard to ensure that the first team next year will be at the maximum competitive level. "This is the goal, and if we can achieve it with players that are already here, much the better, "said Freixa, who reminded everybody once again that the club has 45 million euros for future signings, plus the sale of players which can generate more income.

Messi’s marathon

The Argentine striker has played 62 games this season for Barcelona and his country, and still has the Copa America ahead of him, meaning he is most probably going to play even more than his personal record of 64 games in a season.
Messi’s marathon
Ten days before the Copa America kicks off, Messi is obviously keen to win the trophy for his country, Argentina, who are hosting the tournament. It would be his first international title since the Under 20 World Cup and the Beijing Olympics. But it has been a marathon season for him, having already clocked up 62 appearances. 55 of these were for Barça and 7 for Argentina, including last night’s friendly with Albania. Messi only has to play in the three group stage matches in the Copa America to beat his personal record of 62 matches in one season.

More than ever under Guardiola
2010-09-24_ENTRENO_11.JPGMessi appeared in 55 of the 62 Barça matches this season. He always wants to play and he’s getting his wish this year. It was in the 2009/10 season that he played 64 matches, 53 for FC Barcelona, and in the treble winning year he played 60 matches, 51 for Barcelona.

More and more
He made his club debut under Frank Rijkaard in the 2004/05 season and has been a regular feature of the first team ever since. In 2005/06 he played 35 club and international fixtures, and then in 2006/07 that figure rose to 46 and by 2007/08 he was up to 50 games.

Barça’s pre-season rivals: Hajduk Split (I)

From this Monday we will run a series of pieces examining the rivals Barça are due to face in this summer’s pre-season friendlies. Today we begin with Hajduk Split, who Guardiola’s team will face on July 23rd at 20.30.
Barça’s pre-season rivals: Hajduk Split (I)
Hajduk Split will be Barça’s first opponents this summer as the European Champions take part in the Croatian team’s centenary celebrations. Hadjuk finished second behind Dynamo Zagreb in the Croatian League last season and will have their big new signing, the Bulgarian coach Krassimir Balakov –ex teammate of Hristo Stoichkov – in charge for the match.

The second spot in the league means that Hadjuk will be in the Europa League next season - a competition they will join in the third round alongside teams such as Atletico Madrid – and if they progress they will be into the Group stages.

Striker Ante Vukusic, with 14 goals, was the team’s leading league scorer and was only beaten by Dynamo’s Krstanovic with 19 in last season’s competition.

VUCEVIC.jpgEx Barça player Goran Vucevic was coach at the club for a large slice of last season. He left Hadjuk in 1992 to sign for Barça, but he struggled at the Club and was transferred to Porto as part of the deal which brought Victor Baia to the Camp Nou.

The game will be staged at the Poljud Stadion in Split, which was built in 1979 and is situated a few miles out of the centre with an all-seater capacity of 35,000. The stadium was a considerable architectural landmark and was constructed the main stadium of the 1979 Mediterranean Games.

As well as the football pitch, the stadium has an eight lane athletics track, as well as a number of other sporting installations. For this first game of the pre-season, Guardiola will only be without his South American players - Messi, Mascherano, Milito, Dani Alves and Adriano, who have been involved in the Copa America.

Iniesta: “it’ll be hard to match it next year –but we will try”

During the presentation of the UNESCO-Valldigna award for sport, Andres Iniesta summed up the last year, in which he won the Spanish and European titles with Barça and the World Cup with Spain, as “very special”.
Iniesta: “it’ll be hard to match it next year –but we will try”
On July 11th 2010, Andres Iniesta scored the winning goal in Spain’s win over Holland and the whole world saw his fantastic gesture to the late Dani Jarque - a typically honest and heartfelt expression from the Barça midfielder that has helped to make him one of Spain’s most popular footballers, on and off the pitch. That feeling was recognised on Sunday when he was awarded the UNESCO-Valldigna Award for sport at the Valencia town of Simat de la Valldigna. Iniesta thanked the organisers for the award, who hailed him as: “an example to follow - one of the maximum representatives of fair play in the current game”.

“A very special year”
2011-05-30_COPAS_27.JPGIniesta will be back in training for the 2011-12 season on July 18th, but he is still happy to sit back and look over the astonishing last 12 months he’s enjoyed, commenting: “Since the World Cup, it’s been a very good year, very beautiful and very special, in which we’ve again won many titles. What’s more, I’ve won the best title –I’m a father to a little girl”. Iniesta also added: “it’ll be hard to match it next year –but we will try”.

“Rosell wants the best for us”
Iniesta also reacted to President Sandro Rosell’s comments last week concerning the attacks on the Club and its players. “everyone has to look after their own interests – our President wants the best for us, for the Club and our people – so he demands respect, as we deserve”.

Granada are La Liga team number 20 for the 2011-12 season

After 35 years out of the top flight, Granada won the play off final against Elche to ensure they will again be playing the likes of Barça next season. Granada join the automatically promoted sides Betis and Rayo in La Liga for the 2011-12 season.
Granada are La Liga team number 20 for the 2011-12 season
Following the goalless draw in the first game at home, Granada got through on the away goal rule with a 1-1 draw in Elche on Saturday night. The play offs were held between the fourth and seventh teams in the Liga Adelante – Barca B were third but barred from promotion, whilst Rayo and champions Betis went straight up. Celta and Valladolid fell in the semis and it was the Granada club who finally won the right to play with the big boys next year.

Good record for Barça
Granada were last in the top flight in the 1975-76 season, when they were relegated after ten seasons in Primera. Barça have faced Granada 34 times in the league competition and have won 26, drawing and losing four times. In their 17 visits to the Camp Nou, Granada have never even taken a point, having lost every game.

Big step to title glory (1-4)

Barça Alusport pulled off a well deserved 1-4 win in the third game of their league title play offs and now have two opportunities to take the trophy.

Big step to title glory (1-4)

The team came back from a goal down and put in an electric second half performance which gave them a deserved win after showing themselves the better team throughout in an exciting game.

Barça at their best
_CHA9075.JPGThere was a full house at the Pedro Delgado Hall and Barça needed to be at their best to silence the noisy home crowd, who showed their support for their team from the off and the Segovia players reacted with a great start, dominating the visitors and through Lozano, Esquerdinha and Mati they created plenty of danger. It was all built on some individual bursts and counter attacks though and soon Barça Alusports were able to impose their passing game and find spaces to threaten the hosts’ goal.

Lin, Torras and Javi Rodríguez came close to converting the dominance into goals and Saad was unlucky to hit the woodwork after brilliant work from Torras. Igor also saw the post deny him and Carlos failed to round off a well executed move when he fired high.

However, just when Barça looked most likely to open the scoring, Segovia scored when Esquerdinha took advantage of a free kick from just outside the box. The goal increased the pressure in the Hall, where the home fans went wild, but Barça kept their cool and didn’t let their heads drop –not even when Daniel cleared off the line from Lin and Cidão made a great stop from Wilde, who was surprisingly back in the team after a six week layoff.

Lead taken before the break
_CHA9127.JPGBarça finally got their just deserts for their dominance when Fernandão hit a scorcher past Cidão and after Wilde had again hit the woodwork, Igor and Javi Rodriguez connected well and Cidão’s mistake handed Igor the second to send the visitors in 1-2 at the break.

The second half started in the same way, with Barça’s team game dominating Segovia’s more cautious and individualistic style. Cristian had to be sharp to stop two long range efforts from Lozano.

The referees ignored a clear penalty against Igor, but the Barça players kept to their game plan and Lin rounded off a good move down the wing from Torras to make it 1-3 and then nearly added a fourth on two occasions.

This is the end of a long season though, and as the team took a breather, Esquerdinha hit the post and Cristian made a great stop at Geison’s feet. Segovia were pushing hard now, with the crowd behind them, but they were unable to find a way through the Barça defence and Lin rounded the night off with the fourth late on to leave them in pole position in the playoff series.

Three years of the Guardiola era

This Friday is the third anniversary of Josep Guardiola’s presentation as first team manager. On June 17, 2008, a project began that has gone on to make history.

Three years of the Guardiola era

“I cannot promise titles, but I am sure the people will be proud of us”. Those were the words of a young coach of just 37 years, who had just taken Barça B up to Division 2B. He had achieved everything as a player, but was only just starting out as a professional coach. It was Josep Guardiola, but three years after pronouncing those words, he has achieved recognition as the architect of the best Barça team ever, and one of the best teams ever to grace the football world.

Sala París was the place where Guardiola told the press and fans about his ambitions. Despite his modesty, he said his desire was to build a winning club, and that he was convinced of his possibilities. “I feel strong and ready, if not, I wouldn’t be here. I have no fear and the challenge doesn’t frighten me. We know it won’t be easy, but I’ll persist”.

2010-09-18_ENTRENO_30.JPGGuardiola said little about techniques or tactics, limiting himself to saying “the most important thing is to win and all styles are good for winning. I know what style I want and want to transmit. I’m a fan of attacking football because of the way I was trained and I believe a lot in talent in hard work.” He certainly managed to keep his word.

Guardiola promised no titles, just work, commitment and dedication. Neither did he ask for patience, because he knows Barcelona is a team where the players and coaches are judged on results. He didn’t need to. The team responded to perfection by winning a historic treble in his first year and going on to shine in the most brilliant period in club history.

10 titles out of 13
Josep Guardiola has an extraordfinary record at the heklm of the first team, having won 10 titles out of a possible 13:

3 Leagues
2 Champions leagues
2 Spanish Supercups
1 Clubs World Cup
1 Spanish Supercup
1 Copa del Rey
