Xavi: “It’s a day to enjoy”

Xavi Hernàndez was a happy man in his press conference today at the Ciutat Esportiva. Well, he has good reason to be after participating in the amazing 5-0 win over Real Madrid.

FC Barcelona midfielder Xavi admitted he’d had trouble sleeping. It’s not every day you put five past Real Madrid and it was hard to come down from the clouds. Being a man with Barça in his DNA, he was as happy as happy could be, and said “I’m delighted to have made the Barça family happy”.

Superiority
2010-11-29_PARTIDO_04.JPGAs Guardiola said last night, Xavi was happy with the way they won it. “We were the better side on the pitch from the first to last minute” he said. “It was a historic result, but especially because of such superiority”.

Better than the 6-2
The 6-2 win at the Bernabéu last year is fresh on everybody’s memories, but Xavi actually thought that “although the result was more or less the same, we played even better last night … It was one of the best games of my life. We have done better in other games, but probably never in one quite so important”.

Talking on the pitch
2010-11-30_ENTRENO_27.JPG“In the build-up to the match we just wanted to ignore all the noise being made, we just wanted to do our talking on the pitch. Barça were vastly superior. In every way, every facet, we were better”, said Xavi. But he didn’t think they had a point to prove. “We’re just a team that loves to compete and to keep accepting challenges”.

Big blow
Xavi agreed that it was “a big blow for Madrid, now we have to see if they can recover.” In turn, for his own team, he reckoned “it had the opposite effect. It was a huge boost for morale”.

Barça’s best ever showing after 13 games

The 5-0 win over Real Madrid on Monday also makes Barça 2010/11 the best ever FCB team after thirteen league matches, with eleven wins, one draw and just one defeat.

There is plenty of reason for optimism. Whenever Barça have got 32 or more points from their first 13 games, they have gone on to win the championship.

First league with Cruyff
ZUBIZARRETAjugant.JPGIn 1990/91, the Dream Team under Johan Cruyff got off to a cracking start with six wins in a row against Espanyol (0-1), Valencia (3-1), Betis (2-3), Valladolid (1-0), Tenerife (0-1) and Athletic Bilbao (4-1). They then slipped up against Atlético Madrid (2-1), but after beating Mallorca at the Camp Nou (2-1) they had ten wins, two draws and one defeat, scoring 26 goals and conceding nine. With 22 points (32 by today’s system), Barça were four ahead of the surprising Logroñés. They ended up winning the title with 57 points, ten more than Atlético Madrid. Zubizarreta, Koeman, Bakero, Begiristain, Goikoetxea, Laudrup and Stoichkov were the stars of that team.

Rijkaard’s winning mentality
With stars like Ronaldinho, Eto’o, Deco, Xavi, Puyol, Iniesta and Valdés in the 2004/05 squad, the second of the Frank Rijkaard era, Barça got off to a great start. The 2-1 win over Getafe in game 13 meant that with 32 points from 10 wins, a draw and a defeat at Betis supposed a 7 point lead on Real Madrid, who had been beaten at the Camp Nou. 3-0. Barça won the title with 84 points, four more than Madrid.

First for Guardiola
_J2N0200.jpgDespite a dodgy start (1-0 defeat to Numancia and 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou against Racing), the 2008/09 season then saw Barça and Guardiola go on an amazing 9-win streak, such that by game 13 (a 3-0 win at Sevilla) they were flying away with 10 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat. The 32 points put the club six ahead of Real Madrid. Finally, 87 points for Barça and 78 for the whites. It was the beginning of a golden era. Eto’o and Henry were the strikers supplied by such geniuses as Leo Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Piqué and Alves.

Guardiola marches on
There was more of the same in 2009/10. Rather than rest on their laurels, Barça continuing playing dazzling football and breaking records. By game 13, they had set a new record of ten wins, three draws and no defeats. Ibrahimovic, Pedro and Bojan had been added to the blend, and such was the level of demand that the team were even criticised for the three draws on away turf. The numbers spoke for themselves, and after beating Xerez (0-2), FCB had a record 33 points, five more than Real Madrid, who had played one game more. It would be a remarkable season in which Barça topped the league with a record 99 points.

A 5-0 win to set up new record
But this team knows no limits, and has just beaten even that amazing tally. In 2010/11 Barça have a new 13-match record of 34 points thanks to 11 wins and one draw, and just one defeat, a 2-0 shock at the Camp Nou against Hercules. The run has included such extraordinary results as 8-0 away to Almeria and the historic 5-0 win in the clásico to leapfrog Real Madrid and take a two point lead. Impossible to ask for more.

But the overall record for the first 13 games is still held by Real Madrid, who started with 12 wins and a draw in the 1991/92 season. They won the title that year, eight ahead of Barça, in the time when wins were still only worth two points. But none of that served for anything, because ultimately it was Barcelona that won the champion ship that season.

F C Barcelona: Xavi confident about team’s prospects

F C Barcelona: Xavi confident about team’s prospects

Xavi confident about team’s prospects

In this exclusive interview with Barça TV and www.fcbarcelona.cat, Xavi Hernandez takes a wide ranging view of the team’s prospects and remains confident about their options this season.

The Barça midfielder also talks about his recent injury and insists that the recent points dropped at home were down to missing chances.

The fans have 15 days without a game to reflect on the team’s last result. How are you enjoying the break? "Well, I’m relaxed about it. It’s a strange moment for me, because I’m used to going off with the Spanish team, but it’s been good for me mentally. I’m also happy because my tendon injury is getting better."

You must have given a lot of thought to why we’ve dropped 5 points at home already
2010-10-03_PARTIDO_21.JPG"I think we were maybe a bit short of concentration at key moments. Against Mallorca there were moments when the second goal would have finished the game off. I think we were actually playing for time a bit and then we found ourselves at 1-1. The problem was that we didn’t take our chances."

Does that mean the team were too relaxed? "No, the thing is that when you dominate the game so much, there’s a tendency to think the goal must come, if not with this chance, then with the next one....It was like that before, we’d get two or three chances and we’d be two up. I just think we have to make a small change in the dynamic at the start of these games and that will be it."

The game against Mallorca saw the team have more shots than in all but one game so far this season – does that reinforce the idea that it’s the lack of firepower up front that’s leading to the dropped points? "Yes, the lack of sharpness and tension, particularly from corners and free kicks. We have to improve that, because we have dropped 5 points and that can’t happen. We only dropped two all season with the draw against Villarreal last year and these five might be vital at the end of the season. Let’s hope not, but five points are a lot to drop at home."

Talking of goals and scoring them, how do you think Villa is settling in? "He adapted straight away. We know him well from the Spanish team. He’s a very self effacing man, very much a football man who loves the game and we all know he can score goals by the hatful. He’s scoring and playing a big part in the team game, I reckon he’s a perfect signing for us, I’ve always said so and he’s proving me right."

Do you think the fans are being too impatient with Bojan?
2010-01-28_ENTRENO_025.JPG"Yes, I do, because I think he’s doing well. Much more mature than before. He’s taking on an important role within the group. He’s always very professional and looks after himself and works hard –the goals will come. He was unlucky the other day, but so were the rest of the team, not just the strikers. It seems like all the responsibility is on Bojan’s shoulders and we all have to help him. He’s scored goals all his life and I’m sure he’ll continue to do so."

Thiago and Nolito came on at a difficult moment – how do see the youngsters who are coming through? Are they ready to take on responsibility? "Yes, I’m sure they are. We didn’t win the other day, but they did a good job when they came on. Thiago is a player who can make a career here, just like Nolito, Fontàs, Muniesa… and we are lucky to have them. They too are lucky to have Guardiola who will give them their chances. Bringing them on when we were drawing the other day says a lot for Pep. He trusts the home grown players because he knows they don’t let him down."

You came up from the B team yourself. Does this crop of youngsters seem better prepared? "Yes, I think they might be more competitive and mature, because they are in the second division and they won a playoff last year, also many of them are under 19 and under 21 internationals. I think they are well prepared for life in the first team."

It seems as if other teams show you more respect every season and that leads them to come into the game determined to close it down. Is that a problem? "Yes, it is, because they don’t play the same way against us as they do against other teams. Rubin had six men in defence the other day. We know all about that though and it’s been going on for a while. What we have to do is to keep on playing our way – that’s what has brought us all so much success."

If your opponents are learning how to play you, it’s also true that the team are constantly reinventing themselves – midfielders dropping back when we attack and full backs becoming wingers.....does Guardiola demand a constant evolution?
2010-08-12_ENTRENO_TARDE_13.JPG"Yes, and it’s important to look for tactical variations. Pep’s crazy! He’s always watching videos of games and he has a great staff to help him. It’s fundamental to know how we should play, if we should get down the flanks, look for superiority in the middle..... that’s what we do a lot of work on in training. Pep is crazy about tactics, he knows so much and his enthusiasm is infectious."

The pitch is being changed at the Nou Camp at the moment, has the state of the pitch affected the team’s game? "Yes, it has. The state of the pitch is vital for our attacking game, our first touch football and our pressing. When the grass is soft and damp, that’s important for our game. It wasn’t all that good these last few games and I think we had to change it. I guess it will be better now –I hope so, because it’s vital for us."

Tomorrow, in the second part of this interview, Xavi will talk more about his own personal feelings.

Stats from the Mallorca game

The draw against Mallorca left a number of interesting stats:

► Messi’s 21st minute goal was the first goal the team have scored in the second quarter hour of a La Liga game so far this season.

► As well as Nolito’s debut, Jeffren made his first appearance of the season.

► This was the first game of the season that Barça have finished without picking up a single card.

2010-10-03_FCB_-_RCD_MALLORCA_013.jpg► Alves and Bojan are the only two players who have featured in all 10 games the teams have played so far this season.

► The Mallorca game was the second of the season in which Maxwell has not figured, having also missed out in the match against Panathinaikos, which was also the last game in which Abidal had started.

► The game was also Thiago’s first at the Nou Camp this season, having played in both the games at the Vicente Calderon and San Mames.

► This was the first time this season that the team recorded two results on the run which were the same, following the 1-1 draw in Kazan on Wednesday.

Barça's World Cup: Argentina (II)

After a difficult qualification stage Diego Maradona's Argentina head to the World Cup Finals with doubts surrounding them, but they will have the best player in the world in Lionel Messi to drive them on.

"I see Argentina as one of the candidates to win the cup despiet nobody having us down as favourites," Messi told reporters as the build-up to the tournament continued.

Messi ready to shine

The Albiceleste side revolves around the FC Barcelona star and there has been clear proof of how important he is in the fact that Maradona changed his tactics in training recently to a classic 4-4-2 to allow Messi to play in a free role.

Expectations are high that the Blaugrana forward will shine on the biggest stage of all and he believes that playing for Barça will help him wirthstand the pressure that will be placed on him in South Africa. "I will try to do for Argentina what I do for Barcelona," he stated. Alongside Messi are a littany of outstanding stars with Gonzalo Higuaín, Diego Milito, Carlos Tévez, Martin Palermo and Sergio Agüero.

Group B

After winning the World Cup in 1978 Argentina regained the trophy in 1986 when Maradona was the star and they will be looking to end a run of 24 years without being crowned as the best. Before they can think about that though they must edge out Nigeria, South Korea and Greece in the group stage.

If Argentina fulfill their billing as favourites to win the group then they are likely to meet either Thierry Henry's France or a Mexico team containing rafael Márquez and Jonathan Dos Santos.

Preparation in Buenos Aires

Argentina travelled to South Africa on Friday after spending a few days preparing in Buenos Aires, where they also defeated Canada 5-0 in a friendly. Messi did not play due to a muscle strain as Maradona was keen to rest him.

Barça’s World Cup: Spain (I)

The eight FC Barcelona players in the Spanish national side will start their campaign on June 16 in Durban against Switzerland. Spain are the top seeds in Group H, and will also face Chile and Honduras.

Though they have never won the trophy before, Spain are one of the hot favourites for glory in South Africa. They were outstanding at Euro 2008 and Del Bosque’s side also powered their way though the qualifying stages for this tournament. The squad of 23 includes no fewer than eight members of the all-conquering Barça team.

Group stages

villa_celebracion_1.jpgNeither Valdés nor Pedro have ever made an official appearance for the national team, and will get their first chance against the Swiss in the first match in the group. Spain then switch to Johannesburg, where Honduras await on June 21, and they close the group against another Latin American nation, Chile, in Pretoria on June 25.

FCB’s Sergio Busquets and Gerard Piqué have played for Spain before, but never in a major tournament.

History

Spain have played all three of its group rivals in previous World Cups. They met the Alpine nation in 1968 and 1994, and won both times.

Spain faced Honduras on the only previous occasion that the Central American nation has made it to the final stages. That was in 1982, in Valencia, when despite home advantage, Spain were held to a shock 1-1 draw in their opening match.

It is some time since Spain and Chile last met at a World Cup. That was way back in 1950, when Spain won 2-0.

Possible future rivals
If Spain qualify, they are unlikely to get an easy match in the next round, Some are calling Group G the Group of Death, for it includes Brazil, Portugal, the Ivory Coast and North Korea. Spain will be playing one of the qualifiers from that group in the last sixteen, which looks like being a tough test.

Laporta keen to keep squad together

Joan Laporta has stated that FC Barcelona will only listen to offer for players who have told the club that they want to leave and explained that Touré Yaya's agent has told him that the midfielder is keen to play more.

The Blaugrana president laid out the board's plans to build on the current squad, having already added David Villa, but did say that if any player makes a request to leave then any offers would be considered.

Touré
laporta290510_x5x.jpgOn Touré's situation at Camp Nou, Laporta commented: "He is a great player who has shone at Barça and, therefore, we would like him to stay here for many years to come, but his agent has talked to us about the possibility of him leaving because he is slightly unhappy about certain sporting aspects," he explained. "The player is unsettled because he wants to play more and for that reason we will listen to any offers that other clubs may make." Laporta then revealed that while offers for Touré had been made, it was down to Txiki Begiristain to deal with them.

Fàbregas

Reflecting on Cesc Fàbregas' situation Laporta continued: "We will not sign any player for moer than their market value. We are interested in signing Cesc and Arsenal know that, but we will not pay exorbitant prices for any player. If his asking price comes down to a true amount then we will do all we can to sign him, but it has to be a realistic price."

laporta290510_x4x.jpgWhile talks have taken place with Arsenal the Barça president believes that "it is very important that Cesc declares openly his desire to come to Barça". Talks have also been held between manager Arsène Wenger and the midfielder and Laporta thinks that "it is always good that a trainer reaches an agreement with a player".

Ibrahimovic
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has also been the subject of media speculation, but Laporta is not aware of anything official. "I have not heard any of the news that he is thinking about leaving Barça," the supremo stated. "We are not disappointed with Ibra, he has had a good season and we are very proud of the job he has done and, above all, his attitude within the squad. We are pleased that player of his level has adapted so well to the squad and has been so humble. We are very pleased with him."

8 Million Euro Profit

Barca recorded a second half net profit of eight million Euros in the last six months of 2009, with income increasing 19.7% over the same period in 2008 to 222,8 million Euros.

The Club Vice-President Joan Boix announced the figures this Thursday, revealing that the club had made an eight million Euros profit on increased income of 222.8 million Euros. Outgoings totalled 211 million before finance costs of 3.8 million were taken into account.

Income increase across the board
2010-01-28_PRESENTACION_RESULTADOS_ECONOMICOS_PRIMER_SEMESTRE_004.jpgIncome increased across all areas of the club’s business, with more money coming from UEFA and new deals with Catalan TV Station TV3 Etisalat and Turkish Airlines, which combined with income from the Tour of USA and the friendly game held in Kuwait to boost income by nearly a fifth.

Ticket sale income also increased, as did monies from the tours of the ground and other uses of the club’s facilities and Sr Boix explained: “all business areas have seen an increase, with only slight variations and that means the club is thriving on not just one single area”.

36 million more in income
_DSH8671.JPGThe 222,8 million Euros of income compares with 186 million in the final six months of 2008 and Joan Oliver stressed the importance of the club’s sporting success to the improved figures: “we are in a context where the majority of companies in the world have seen their income stagnate or go down, where the majority of football clubs have also seen their income stagnate or go down. Meanwhile, we are presenting figures that show we have increased income by 20%. That increase would not have been possible without the great sporting success we enjoyed last season”.

Spending increases

2010-01-28_PRESENTACION_RESULTADOS_ECONOMICOS_PRIMER_SEMESTRE_006.jpgSpending also increased from 166 to 211 million Euros- a 27.1% rise- primarily due to new signings, improved contracts and bonuses as a result of successes in the two Super Cups and the World Club Cup. Sr Boix explained: “the success on the field has a short term economic cost, but over the next few years we will see the advantages of the sporting achievements we enjoyed last season”.

Money on the players
2009-12-16_PARTIDO_084.JPGThe Vice President insisted: “general costs have dropped and it is the sporting costs that have increased, but we are clear that this is where we have to invest. The players have accepted five important variables – games played, classification for the Champions League and winning the League, Cup and Champions. That means of course that if we win everything then the bonuses the players get is important”.

Bojan determined to keep fighting for a place

Bojan Krikic spoke to the media this lunchtime and insisted: “I’m focussed on continuing to work hard and improve as a player – I want to make it hard for the boss!”

Krikic insisted: “I’m very happy to be able to work at a club like Barca. I’m surrounded by a fantastic group, who really believe in me and I’m trying to respond to that by helping as much as I can. I’m keen to continue fighting for a place in the team and I want to make it hard for the boss when he has to pick his starting 11”.

Move not on the agenda
2010-01-28_ENTRENO_025.JPGQuestioned about a possible move away from the club at the end of the season, Bojan made his intentions very clear: “I’m not even thinking about leaving. My teammates and the boss are all good to me and I’m very happy here – I’m just focussed on Barca”.

Keep on working
2010-01-28_ENTRENO_089.JPGAlthough he hasn’t had too many chances this season, Bojan reflected: “sure, I’ve not been playing a lot, but I just have to keep working like I have been and try to force my way into the team. The important thing is that whoever plays, we are all pulling together to try and win the league and the Champions”.
